-How long have you been at Visikol?

I have been at Visikol since September 2022.

-What do you do at Visikol?

I am a Histology Technician here at Visikol. As a Histo Tech, I do the wet lab work for our Multiplex Immunofluorescence and Immunohistochemistry projects.

-What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on here at Visikol?

My favorite project so far has been working with non-human primate eyes. We grossed, processed, sectioned, labeled, and imaged the tissue. It was really cool seeing a project go from start to finish, whole tissue to beautifully labeled images.

-Most challenging part of working in the science field?

The most challenging part of working in the science field is knowing that science can be unpredictable and that the results you get may not be what you were expecting. In fact, with the biological sciences, experiments tend to fail more often than they succeed. You need to have good problem-solving skills to understand why an experiment may have failed and how to optimize the experiment to get good results.

-Most rewarding part about working the science field?

The most rewarding part of working in the science field is knowing that the work we do here will help to make a difference in the medical community. Many of my family members have developed cancer and other life-changing autoimmune disorders, and it feels good to be a part of the research to help find the cure for different cancers and other debilitating diseases.

-How does your department help Visikol accelerate the drug discovery process?

Our Histology department here at Visikol helps to accelerate the drug discovery process by identifying where specific proteins of interest are located within a tissue. Utilizing our unique Multiplex Immunofluorescence protocol, we are able to give our clients high-quality images of their tissues labeled with over 25 antibodies. This allows researchers to identify new targets for their drugs or determine whether their drugs work as intended.

Fun fact about yourself?

I used to work as a wildlife rehab technician where I helped to rehabilitate injured and orphaned wildlife in Pennsylvania and Ohio. My favorite animals to work with were the bats, fawns, and raccoons.

How long have you been at Visikol?

Since October of 2021

What do you do at Visikol?

I am a Senior Image Analyst. My job is to convert pixels into meaningful quantitative endpoints for our clients.

How does your department help Visikol accelerate the drug discovery process?

The Image Analysis department specializes in batch processing and automation, which is required when studying thousands of cells under various conditions. We make High-Content Screening possible at Visikol, and ensure your findings are statistically significant.

What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on here at Visikol?

Over the last year, I have been challenging myself as a data scientist by executing the multivariate analysis required for the Cell Painting assay. This assay requires me to investigate the mechanisms responsible for morphological change, rather than quantify predetermined endpoints. This shift in perspective has made me a better scientist.

Most challenging part of working in the science field?

The most challenging part about working in any branch of science is that there are always more questions to be answered. As this community learns, the queries become more precise.

Most rewarding part about working the science field?

My biggest motivator as a scientist is that I am “living in the future”. It may not be the era of flying cars like we once imagined, but the community is collecting data faster than we can analyze it. It encourages me that I live in a time where I am limited only by computing power and my own abilities; both are guaranteed to grow exponentially.

Fun fact about yourself?

I am a self-taught programmer. My biggest goal when coming to Visikol was to be less reliant on vendor software and create pipelines/visualization tools of my own. These are now routines tasks I accomplish in both python and the imageJ macro language.

-How long have you been at Visikol?

I started in February of 2021, so two years and a few months.

-What do you do at Visikol?

I am a Senior Scientist on the In Vitro team. I’ve probably worked more on liver models than anything else, but I get to take part in a wide variety of experiments, which always keeps things new!

-What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on here at Visikol?

I got to label and image viruses in a tissue culture model that led to some pretty cool 3D pictures.

-Most challenging part of working in the science field?

The most challenging part is probably recognizing when it’s time to let go of a certain approach to a problem and move on to one that’s more effective. We all want to figure out why things don’t go as we expect, but sometimes it’s more efficient to simply go to Plan B.

-Most rewarding part about working in the science field?

I learn new things about the world every single day!

-How does your department help Visikol accelerate the drug discovery process?

We specialize in assays that provide clear answers to specific research questions that often arise in the early stages of drug development. Data generated by our experiments can indicate which candidates show promise for a specific effect and which can be “weeded out” before wasting any more valuable research time (and money!).

-Fun fact about yourself?

I enjoy helping out at a local sanctuary for farmed animals with disabilities.

-What do you do at Visikol?

I am the Associate Director of In Vitro and Histology, and my job entails the designing, high-level project management of, as well as the execution of projects for our clients.

-What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on here at Visikol?

I am biased towards any projects that use our immune infiltration model. It never gets old seeing the immune cells do their job when it comes to cancer cells. One of the more interesting projects I have done was working with CAR-T cells in this model.

-Most challenging part of working in the science field?

The most challenging part of working in a science field would be that you can make the most detailed project/experimental plan in the world, consider every factor you can think of, and something will still go wrong or not work the way you expected. Science has so many variables that you just can’t account for everything. Accepting that fact is difficult to do and can be very discouraging at times.

-Most rewarding part about working the science field?

The most rewarding part about working in the science field is knowing that the work I do today will have an effect on medical treatments in the future.

-How does your department help Visikol accelerate the drug discovery process?

We use our assays, or develop new ones, to help clients answer the questions that they have about their compounds or treatments at varying stages of their drug discovery process.

-Fun fact about yourself?

Unofficial position is ‘The Ruiner of Diets.’ I really enjoy baking and the desserts always end up in the break room.

-What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on here at Visikol?

My favorite project is an R&D project where we were exploring a breast cancer TMA to see if we could perform patient stratification based on the patients’ immune profiles. This project is my favorite because I was able to combine various image and data analysis techniques to fully explore the TMA and uncover a better method of classifying patients that can help to guide treatment strategies for breast cancer patients.

-Most challenging part of working in the science field?

The most challenging part of working in the science field, and also the most rewarding, is finding solutions to the many obstacles that can arise in a project due to the variability seen in biology. It can be very frustrating when things do not go as intended, but working through the problem and eventually finding a solution is very rewarding and will teach you a lot along the way.

-Most rewarding part about working the science field?

The most rewarding part is being able to contribute to the drug discovery process by having a hand in testing treatments and researching various diseases to advance the medicinal field so that solutions and a better understanding of diseases can be found to help improve patient care.

-How does your department help Visikol accelerate the drug discovery process?

My department helps Visikol accelerate the drug discovery process by analyzing scientific images to extract and analyze quantitative data that can help answer client’s research questions about diseases or specific treatments. Image analysis helps to put numbers to observations and allows researchers to extract large amounts of information from images of their samples. The large amount of information enables researchers to explore multiple aspects about their samples and can elicit features that are important such as the effectiveness of their treatment, mechanism of action for a treatment, characterization of a disease, and much more.

-Fun fact about yourself?

Option 1: A fun fact about me is that I am a robot from outer space sent to take over the world.

-How long have you been at Visikol?
3 years

-What do you do at Visikol?
I am a Principal Scientist and I design, oversee, plan, and execute projects related to our in vitro services. My focus is typically our liver-based assays, but I dabble in other areas as well.

-What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on here at Visikol?
It is really hard to pick a favorite project, because I’ve worked on a lot of really cool projects. I would say my favorite types of projects are ones where I get to develop and optimize an assay. One of the coolest projects I worked on involved extracting cells directly from primary kidney tissue and then developing a 2D fibrosis assay using those cells.

-Most challenging part of working in the science field?
The most challenging part of working in science is making sure you are asking the right questions so that the answers you get are relevant.

-Most rewarding part about working in the science field?
The most rewarding thing to me is learning new things. Every time you run a study you learn something new to add to our collective knowledge.

-How does your department help Visikol accelerate the drug discovery process?
I think one of the most influential things that we do in our department is developing new in vitro assays. We strive to create assays that allow for physiologically relevant compound screening so that drugs can be screened out quickly, which can save time and money in the long term.

-Fun fact about yourself?
I enjoy painting and drawing in my free time.

·How long have you been at Visikol?
I have been at Visikol since the beginning of January 2023.

·What do you do at Visikol?
I am a scientist but more specifically, I am a study director for the histology department here at Visikol. As a study director, it is my role to facilitate communications with clients and our research technicians to ultimately provide answers to questions revolving around tissue diseases and tissue imaging.

·What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on here at Visikol?
As a recent hire, I have yet to delve into many projects on my own, but with my background in microscopy, any project that requires fluorescence or brightfield microscopy imaging always gets me excited.

·Most challenging part of working in the science field?
The most challenging part of working in the science field is being okay with failure. Most things, especially in the biological sciences, fail more times than they do succeed. Understanding that you need to go through the failures to truly understand how things work is part of being a scientist, and it is not always easy.

·Most rewarding part about working in the science field?
The most rewarding part about working in the science field is the opportunity to talk to people with great minds and great ideas on a daily basis. It provides the mental exercise for helping solve problems and keeping me sharp. Every day that I can help someone else, is a day I can be proud of.

·How does your department help Visikol accelerate the drug discovery process?
The Histology department helps Visikol accelerate the drug discovery process by providing the hands on processing, imaging and labeling of tissue samples. With our multiplex staining protocol, we are able provide more data with less sample. So, if someone has a rare tumor that we can only get a small portion of, we can use our multiplexing technique to identify several different targets in succession.

·What is a fun fact about yourself?
I am what some may call a “sneakerhead”. I have over 80 pairs at the moment, and always appreciate a great pair of kicks with a cool background story.

·How long have you been at Visikol?
15 months.

·What do you do at Visikol?
Leading the bioanalytical analysis/chemistry department.

·What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on here at Visikol?
The development of the in vitro blood-brain barrier (BBB) assay.

·Most challenging part of working in the science field?
Generating solid and reproducible data with high confidence through a rigorous experimental plan.

·Most rewarding part about working in the science field?
Respect and appreciation when discovering or developing something useful for the community. In addition to self-satisfaction!

·How does your department help Visikol accelerate the drug discovery process?
Bioanalytical analysis plays a central role in drug discovery by providing quantitative measurements of drugs and their metabolites in the biological system, proteins, and other biopolymers. At Visikol, we are utilizing mass spectrometry to develop novel in vitro assays that will help the drug discovery community fail their drug candidates earlier on the pipeline, such as the BBB permeability assay. Furthermore, the quantitative monitoring of proteins (proteomics) and their small molecule products (metabolomics), in addition to the dynamic changes to the genome (epigenetics), provides a real-time snapshot of the biological system that guides the development of better drug candidates.

·What is a fun fact about yourself?
I enjoy SCUBA diving in the Red Sea! I also enjoy playing tennis and table tennis.
